The following year, 1997, his mega hit “Follow the Leader” sent Nigel up the charts to #5 on Billboard, reflecting the fans love for his music in the Caribbean and Europe. With over 500,000 copies sold and climbing, Nigel’s songs are heard on radio, at luxury resorts and on cruise ships fueling parties worldwide.
Nigel Lewis continues to be one of the world’s most sought-after performers, winning awards for original songs he has written while smoothly making a transition from the secular music scene to Gospel Music. He electrifies Gospel Music, incorporating Caribbean rhythms such as Soca and Reggae with original Gospel lyrics. His performance style thrills and excites audiences because they become part of the show, not just spectators, by his special gift of engaging the crowd in Call and Response. He creates a unique, one-of-a-kind experience of Gospel Music for every listener, whether at a concert or listening in their car.
Producer of over ten albums and writer of more than 70 original songs, Nigel’s music is racking up awards. He received eight nominations and won two Marlin Awards (Caribbean version of the Stellar Awards) in 2008 for his album “Unlock the Block”. In 2009, Lewis released his ninth album entitled “Light up the Darkness,” with his first singles “Jesus Team” and “Good Time Praise”, winning four of eleven nominations at the 2010 Marlin Awards, and two in 2014 Marlin Awards. In 2010, Nigel won the Best Gospel Song Award for “Walk Away” at The International Reggae & World Music Awards (IRAWMA) held in Trinidad that year.
In 1998, Nigel was the opening act for Janet Jackson and Ricky Martin. And in 2014, Nigel graced the stage along side Grammy and stellar award singers Tye Tribbet, Canton Jones, and Ricky Dillard. Lewis has also developed into a remarkable songwriter and producer. With no formal education in music, he taught himself to play six instruments, which have been very useful leading his band in live performances or in studio helping, new artists to produce their music.
Born on the island of Tobago, Nigel’s musical roots and influence came from listening to Eddie Grant and Bob Marley. Since the age of seven, he sought refuge from hardship by imposing a self-made security blanket called music, where he draws his personal strength. He has always been willing to be the voice of the people. By the time Lewis was fourteen years old, he had written and sung a song for the Prime Minister of his country, addressing the poor living conditions in his hometown of Toco. Shortly after his performance, the town saw improvements.
Nigel loves interacting with people. He always says, “It is a joy to watch people having fun and enjoying the music.”
Nigel’s main source of inspiration comes from his personal relationship with his Savior. As a musician he realizes that he has access to millions of ears, and that is something that he has never taken for granted. “Musicians have the power to inspire and inform the people that are in their hearing. As much as I love the audience to enjoy the party, I also want to give them food for their souls. It is important to me to save lives, as well as entertain. Hopefully, my music helps people to embrace the loving, life-giving message of Jesus Christ.”
